Flashback =D

Well, I was uploading some pictures, and I realized I forgot to put some on the blog. Mainly, Rassa's party before she left, which was a lot of fun. (But she left, and that's not a lot of fun, but it's alright.)

This is a picture of the cake that was made for Rassa. I did not have a hand in making it this time. It looks beautiful, doesn't it? It tastes just as nice, actually. However, we needed to store it in a fridge until the party, and that meant making it change plates. Thankfully, I just took pictures of this process, since I certainly would have botched it.

Here our crew of scientists are hard at work. How to move exhibit A from Plate 1 to Plate 2? Clearly this requires much thought and several spatulas.

No, the cake didn't break. Actually, it went quite nicely onto the other plate. However, there was a lot of icing left over, and so I sample some...er, a lot, really. But so did everyone else there! I swear! And, uh, I may, or may not have started a food fight.

Well, the evidence clearly points in the direction of me looking like a homicidal maniac with icing all over his face while giving someone their 'just desserts.'

A little icing on Montseratt's shoulder was what started it, I swear. Then she gets me straight in the face with it, and then Jean starts LITERALLY THROWING IT at me. I would like to see myself as the victim in this circumstance. Really. It was rather fun, and we all had a good time.

And I had icing all over my face and my shirt.

This was our surprise party for Rassa in the park. It was on Sunday, but it really should have been labeled Sun-DEATH. Seriously, it was around 35 degrees. Sweltering. The nice girl in the blue dress made Rassa's cake. It took Rassa (the girl with the extraordinarily bright red hair) nearly an hour before she realized that this was a surprise party for her. Also, if Sarah D is reading this, yes, we really did pull the same stunt twice. And, yes, she had no clue. And, uh, if Sarah D is reading this, uh, those documents you really, really needed me to send are on their way, in the mail! I swear! Yes! Really! Really really!

Uh, they'll be in the mail tomorrow. Sorry.

This is Rassa posing for the camera right before she left. We sat down and hand a really nice talk before she left, and she then proceeded to be driven away with her two other Lithuanian friends, who were all going home, and it was a really sad day. However, even if it was bittersweet, I'm getting better as saying goodbye to close friends that I don't want to see leave. Or, I just block the consequences out of my mind better. (Yay Jedi mind tricks! Where would I be without them? Probably still on a dusty planet in a solar system far, far away.)

So here's to me and Rassa, who put together some slammin' dances in the theatre.

And on a completely unrelated note, here's my philosophy pal Jim shaking a vinaigarette like a true man of the table. I had dinner at his house a week ago or so, and it was terrific, and his wife is an excellent cook, and he is, uh, an....excellent salad dressing shaker! =D He lent me a book I need to read, somewhere between Anna Karenina and Augustine readings, but it will happen soon, so I can talk to him about all the excellent things that are said to be in said book! =D Also, Jim is like, way, way smarter than me, and he has, what? Three degrees? I don't know, he's been in the military, (Marines, I think) has a music degree, an exegetical degree, and a bachelor of philosophy from KULeuven when they were offering a one year intensive bachelor's degree in philosophy. Anyways, we talked about how we did this semester (Jim blew me out of the water, not a big surprise, his cranium surely weighs more than mine) and we also talked about life in general and just had a relaxing evening. Being at his place made me realize how much work I have to do to educate myself and become a better reader and that I need to keep teaching myself, again and again, to study harder and smarter.

I'll post more later. Later!

Tuesday, July 11, 2006

Well, the summer thesis work has begun, and it's looking alright. I'll post some pictures of the wedding a little later, but for now I'm tired, so I'll do that in a bit, since I haven't even loaded them on the computer yet.

In other news, I really need an external hard drive, as I am starting to worry about my computer blitzing out on me. Not that I have had issues with it, but simply that I don't want to have my computer die at a very crucial moment.

And, frankly, my luck is such that such a thing probably isn't that unheard of.

Final Exam Results

Well, I did fine, although I had total exam dementia until I got my results. I wasn't very happy with all my marks, (especially my Descartes paper mark, but I didn't think it was going to be a good mark, anyways) but I should be fairly satisfied, I guess, since many, many people in my class failed at least one exam this semester. I came close to (in my mind, anyways) failing an exam or two, although my results aren't anything like that, but I feel that if I was marking myself, I would had failed myself on at least three classes. Actually, the only one I wouldn't have failed myself on was my Plato exam, and that one I would have given myself a 12 out of 20. Yeah. Maybe I'm being a little too hard on myself, but I have space madness from exams, so don't listen to anything I say.

Anyways, I was one of a handful of people to 'deliberate' on time (ie. finish the year completely without having to retake exams or without having deferred any exams) so that is positive for me, although I feel really bad that so many people failed. I skipped going to the 'proclamation ceremony,' which is basically where the dean reads out everyone's results in front of everyone else, and whether you passed or not. I skipped that because a) I disagree with that on many, many, many levels b) I didn't know if I had passed all my exams and I didn't want to have to pretend not to be an emotional wreck if people pitied me/were having a good time c) It was really, really hot, and proclamation was slated to be a 4 HOUR ORDEAL. AND THAT WAS ASSUMING IT WENT THROUGH ON TIME. As IF I was going to sit through that. Next year when I have to because I'm graduating I'll do it, but certainly not before...and heck, maybe not even then.

Don't get me wrong, since I love pomp and circumstance of many, many kinds, but when I find it to be morally, pedagogically, and pragmatically reprehensible, I just can't bring myself to do it. (I mean, really, it was thirty-five degrees out with high humidity, and they did it in a small room with about 45 people. And, yes, there is nowhere in this city that has air conditioning.)
I just went for the BBQ afterwards, where all the free food and drink was. THAT was a blast, since everything was free, but most people there were either kinda sad (because they failed/deferred exams, so their summer looked pretty dismal) or kinda still stressed out since most of us hadn't been done exams for hardly a week. I was stressed still, and also, I kinda just wanted to be alone, even though I had been alone for a long time studying, it was alone with 'severely mentally unstable because of exams' Brennan, and not the 'Brennan who is normal outside of exams' Brennan. Being around the institute just reminded me of school stuff, and that made me sad because really, I wanted to be outta there as soon as possible to ignore the need to be there with school related stuff. I mean, really. I've been in exams since the end of May. I got my results on July 5. It drove me crazy.

Anyways, I'm glad it's over, and now I am going to Patrick and Montse's wedding tomorrow, and I have generally just been having a good time, although sleeping very, very little since the whole thing started with the gift buying and the traveling around with them and showing around their family friend who came to stay during their wedding. Ugh. OK, I need at least 7 hours tonight. I hope everyone is well, and I'll update more when the wedding bells have rung for some very good friends of mine.

Last Exam: Philosophy Of Religion

This one took a little while to make because I couldn't decide on the joke, so it came less themed, more one fo the jokes I told myself while studying.

Sunday, July 02, 2006

Strangely enough, while composing a list for myself for the summer, I managed to find a top100 things one should not do as an Evil Overlord. They're actually quite brilliant. I'm surprised I didn't think of them myself.

OK, back to 100 list-o-matic.

CanADA

You know, this really didn't take me as long as it normally does. I must be having a good art day, or it's the fact that I'm really tired and I just want to go to bed. Or, I really should try and draw something with some more 'E' for effort attached. (Ooo, nice alliteration, Brennan. Classy.)

I also promised a cartoon from my fifth final in here somewhere. It'll be up eventually. Um, maybe tomorrow. Probably the day after. =D

Anyways, for all the Canadians out there, Happy Canada Day. For all the Americans, happy July 4th very soon. =)

For everybody else, Happy country day, er, whenever that is. Mainly because, uh, I don't know them all. Eh heh. Yeah.

OK, well, I'm totally tapped out. I hope everything is well with everybody back home.

And, really, I miss winter. I miss winter so badly. And it's summer. SUMMER.

Happy Canada Day.

Final 4: The King of Contradictions

I know that most people wont know it, but this person is made up of entirely logical and/or mathematical symbols other than the crown. If you can spot them all, you win a prize! =D

Uh, not that I expect ANYONE to get it. I mean, really.

Another cartoon on my last final in a bit. Going to do other stuff now, but sleep very much needed. Yeah.

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Yes, yes, YES!

This is definitely how I feel about Jesus.

And, no, finals still aren't done. I have another 24 hours before I'm free of this cycle of death and samsara, and I can enter Nirvana, namely, doing nothing for a day or two at least, then a wedding.

Not mine. *big thumbs up*
4th final done.

Cartoons will be up Thursday or Friday, depending on how happy I feel.

Quote of the Early Morn-aka. I need sleep and dealing with finals stress equal to waxing philosophical

Nothing is as hard as it seems and nothing is as good as it gets. Unless you're a man trying to multi-task.

Then you're screwed.

I didn't realize Weird Al had discovered the secret of academia. Listen to it here.

Final 3: Philosophy of God OR Dancing in Club Modernity

Well, three finals are done, and I have two more. This final was fun, but that doesn't mean I did well. I made up a bunch of stuff about these three guys, and then handed in my final. Whether that will end up being a good choice or not it yet to be seen, but I could at least say some stuff about each of the three. This final was over on Wednesday, but I wanted to redo the cartoon because it wasn't sitting very well with me. Not to mention that I like it when I can take some time to relax. Except I'm not relaxing, I'm just too dumb to study.

I have accomplished nothing, and I sure mean NOTHING today. I wanted to understand diagonalization by the end of today, but every time I look at definitions of it, all I see is "blah, blah, blah." I'm lucky that I did a lot of pre-studying with Marianne, Phil, and Franz on this stuff, or I would be in a much less happy place, but I am still struggling to do this by myself because, well, because I'm really, really tired, and it's catching up with me. *Grin* I know that means I shouldn't worry too much, but it sucks because I have the will in my head saying "Study" and then my body and everything else are saying "No, YOU'RE a fruitbasket. Make me."

So, I chalk today up to frittering...fritters...How I miss you. You were one of the many excuses I had for love handles. Now all I have is Belgian bread and milk that isn't fortified with Vitamin D. Sigh. How I miss you, Mini-Wheats cereal. Without you, I am without my daily intake of fibre. Now I eat, musli. MUSLI. Alas, alas.

Well, poetic ode to my North American cravings aside, things here are doin' alright. I hope everyone else is fine, once I'm done finals I will be more fine. I'll update soon, I'm sure, since I can't seem to do any work this weekend, although I having been looking at philosopher's blogs. Naughty.

Blogging

Well, honestly, I haven't been able to update here for a while because a) Blogger isn't uploading my pictures properly b) final exams and c) Blogger isn't uploading my pictures properly.

Needless to say, I am still heavy in it. So, besides reading philosophy blogs about logic, and eating cereal, my day has been uneventful, which is really good, because that means that I can continue to try and understand the Incompleteness Theorem. Hopefully I will be done by 7pm tonight.

Anyways, that's enough of a break. I'll try and post later, which means my next post will either be above this post, below this post, or both. I don't know why Blogger tracks your posts by real-time date as opposed to publish-date, but needless to say, this is a very interesting feature which is currently not useful. I suppose it's useful for those people who write things well in advance, but really, if I had a following, I would pay for my blog, and thus, limit the crashiness. So, no more trying to upload the same post five times. I'll go do work. Bye!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

I wish a Happy Fathetr's Day to all Dads.

But only one of them reads my blog. Props to the Dad-power, yo.

Anyways, I'm going to relax a bit. Then to bed for more studying love in the morning.

It's really hot here, and I sunburnt my nose.

*cries*

Now I wont be able to move my face for three days. I can't believe I didn't think I'd need sunscreen today.

Final 2: Modern Philosophical Texts

This is a typical family moment. My dad is a goofball, my brother was a big goof when he was a kid, and I was that I was last in line for making bunny ears.

If you didn't catch the philosophy joke, it's from Descartes. Anyways, it's less philosophical today because everything about today is totally backwards. I'm not thinking clearly or distinctly because I'm lacking so much sleep. It's been a weird couple of days, and for some reason my spell-checker and grammar-checker quit in the middle of my Descartes essay. I'm not amused. So, needless to say, I'll be working hard at editing my essay VERY CAREFULLY tomorrow morning before I hand it in. I might even do a paper swap with a friend of mine. Well, I can hope, anyways.

Essay

I'm done six pages, taking a quick break from essay writing, and I found out that my favourite online word guy has finally released a book. I'm probably going to buy it, and I'll let you know how it is, but he's an amazing writer, and it's sure to be good. I'm becoming more and more of a fan of words and what they mean and meant the older I get.

Tomorrow's Final: Ancient Philosophy

As a special thing for everybody, and so that I don't do silly things and stay up all night before a final, I'll be doing a final-themed picture before each final, hopefully so my brain focuses on other things, and calms down a bit and makes me sleepy. I think I'm ready, so I'm happy.

Saturday, June 10, 2006

Logique

I just did logic from 2-5 and from 7:30-10:00, and now I'm not sure if I want to do some more stuff...maybe I'll send out resumes.

Logic isn't exhausting, but I can't decide if what I'm saying makes sense.

Yeah. Good sign. ;)

Update...finally.

OK, well, I meant to put this up many a day ago, but Blogger has been offline pretty much all week, so I haven't been able to.

Anyways, this is my night out during the HUGE June Festival called "Leuven in the Scene." Big amount of cool things happened here.

These are the German acrobats who played a big musical drums show in the evening, this is them practicing doing a general jam session the afternoon before, about 20 metres in the air, suspended by a crane on a mobile-like apparatus.

There were literally thousands of people in Leuven. Apparently everybody heard about the ruckus, and there were so many people here I thought I was gonna die. I'm rarely afraid of small spaces, but man, when you have about fifteen people in your bubble and you can't really see or hear your friends unless they're pressed against you, shouting in your ear, "No, do YOU WANT ICE CREAM! I'M GOING TO GET SOME IN THAT REALLY REALLY BIG LINE OVER THERE BETWEEN THE FIRE EATERS AND THE STROLLER BIKER GANG," makes me kinda queasy and squeamish.

This was the big show of the evening. The drummers were up in the air with some acrobats, who jumped around a large metal mobile that was in the shape of a flower that opened and closed as they played. The drummers and musicians played pieces from the Nutcracker, as well as a few other classical pieces. Pretty fun. I liked it, even though there were so many people we were very, very far away. The light show you see is the conductor being lifted up on a pyro-technic filled platform, and it was the big finale of this show. Very cool overall.

This is Romanian Brass Band that we followed through the streets because they were going our way. I gotta tell ya, they sure know how to play a trumpet in Romania. They're pretty darn wicked. Kinda made you want to get your polka in motion.

This was the second big show of the night, which was a bunch of French acrobats (Europe is full of circus people, let me tell you.) who were suspended on ropes and wires and did a whole modern art and dance show which was really interesting. Well, the first45 minutes, anyways. As my friend Jean said, "It's too long. Our modern dance piece in our play was better because it wasn't so long. I like ours better." I had to agree. The first and only lesson of modern dance is that one can only take so much of it before people can't stand not knowing what's going on. I mean, not like you were ever supposed to know. It's modern, after all. =D Lesson should be learned, that no matter whether you smear yourself in paint, or strip yourselves half-naked for a bit of perky sex appeal around midnight, doing random arm-circles in the air for twenty minutes to half-baked techno music is still doing random arm-circles, even if you put jazzy, snazzy clothes on it. And the clothes weren't so jazzy as they were frilly whilst still being minimalist and french. Therefore, failing grade in terms of entertainment value, but artistic value was definitely at a peak. I'll probably never see something like that ever again. Now, I don't know if I'm lucky or I should regret such a thing, but there it is. Modern theatre, can't live with it, can't understand it.

This was the last place we stopped for the night. All the trees were lit up in the city park. It was mega cool, with faces projected onto trees, with modern acting troupes hanging out here, and peolpe walking everywhere late at night in the city park. It was magical, that's all I can say about it. Walking around with your friends, getting to be a kid again for a bit (Because believe me, in Europe, they frown upon anything that resembles childhood or fun except at the appropriate times. You should be getting drunk, not having a good time on swings and stuff. The swings may be free, but the beer is nearly free, and that's the moral of the mindframe here.) is really refreshing, especially for me, since I don't get to hang out with anyone younger than 19 here, which is sad for me. But, I'm still having a good time, and the city park was beautiful. It's all I can say. It was terrific. Tres bein.

Well, that's all I have for now. Blogger is being uppity again, so I'll post more when I can, but really, it's been a pretty fun last couple of weeks. These coming weeks are going to be terrible, but I'll deal. I'll update some more in a bit. =D

Posting

Hey, I'll post something soon, but I ran out of time tonight, and I don't have the energy to do it right now. Finals. Sigh. Anyways, I'll be doing some cool things, maybe a comic, and some pictures later. Gimmie a bit. Tomorrow's a busy day.

Papier

One little two page paper done, one 15 pager to go before Wednesday next week.

I'm being really lazy. I know this is a study period, and I'm being hit with a big wave of not wanting to do anything. This is terrible. I hate it when this happens because sometimes you just get the lazy chi and you have to ride out the storm.

However, today was minorly productive, and so was yesterday, so I suppose I could be mad at myself a lot more. It's not like I'm shirking work, I'm just shriking more than two to three hours of it per day. Dang it anyways.
